What is a fixed bridge dental?

A fixed dental bridge is a type of dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It is called “fixed” because it is permanently attached in the mouth and cannot be removed by the patient, unlike removable dentures.

A fixed bridge works by using the natural teeth on either side of a missing tooth (or teeth) as support. These supporting teeth are called abutment teeth. The dentist places dental crowns on these abutment teeth, and these crowns hold the artificial tooth, known as a pontic, in place. The pontic fills the empty space where the tooth is missing, restoring both function and appearance.

There are different types of fixed dental bridges, including traditional bridges, cantilever bridges, and Maryland bridges. The most common type is the traditional bridge, which is supported by crowns on both sides of the gap. Cantilever bridges are supported by only one adjacent tooth, while Maryland bridges use a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of neighboring teeth instead of full crowns.

A fixed bridge provides several benefits. It helps restore the ability to chew and speak properly, maintains the natural shape of the face, and prevents remaining teeth from shifting out of position. When a tooth is missing and not replaced, surrounding teeth can move into the empty space, leading to bite problems and misalignment. A fixed bridge helps avoid these complications.

The procedure for getting a fixed bridge usually requires two or more dental visits. In the first visit, the dentist prepares the abutment teeth by reshaping them to fit crowns. Impressions of the teeth are then taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where the custom bridge is made. A temporary bridge may be placed to protect the area. In the second visit, the permanent bridge is fitted, adjusted, and cemented into place.

Fixed bridges are durable and can last many years with proper care. Good oral hygiene is very important, including brushing twice daily, flossing around the bridge, and regular dental checkups. Special flossing tools may be needed to clean under the pontic and keep the gums healthy.

Overall, a fixed dental bridge is a reliable and effective solution for replacing missing teeth, improving both oral function and smile aesthetics.
